  • RCPath Blood & Bugs

In 2014, BBC Learning created a series of large-scale World War One at Home events which took place throughout the UK. As part of the tour, the Royal College of Pathologists developed a Blood and Bugs activity, set in a replica WW1 Nissen Hut, where visitors took an interactive journey through medical developments from 1914 to 2014 and learned about the contribution that pathology has made in healthcare as a result of the discoveries and innovations that occurred during WW1.

The Pliosaurus! Exhibition at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery is open from July 2017 - January 2018. The exhibition is partly funded by The Royal College of Pathologist’s Public Engagement Innovation Grant Scheme. Pliosaurus! shows the sheer breadth of pathology, spanning into something Isla Gladstone, the Senior Curator, referred to as paleopathology. Part of the project involved asking Dr Geoffrey Pearson, a veterinary pathologist, to come and have a look at their large pliosaurus skeleton. It transpires that the 150 million year old fossil had many similarities to animals that Jeff sees every day in modern-day veterinary pathology. This short video gives a brief outline of the exhibition, and how it engaged children and members of the public in discovering what pathology is.
